How to Get Rid of Mould in Your Bathroom (and Keep It Away)

Why Auckland bathrooms grow mould so fast, the right way to remove it from ceilings, walls, and silicone without spreading spores, and how to stop it coming back through winter.

How to Get Rid of Mould in Your Bathroom (and Keep It Away)

Auckland's humidity combined with hot showers makes bathrooms the perfect breeding ground for mould. Once it takes hold in the grout or silicone, it can feel impossible to shift.

You've Cleaned It Five Times. It Keeps Coming Back.

You scrub the grout on Saturday, and by Wednesday the black spots are back. Wiping mould treats the symptom; the cause is moisture that never leaves the room.

The tiles look clean on the surface, but the root systems are alive underneath. And here is the honest truth — no product in the world fixes a ventilation problem. Until the steam leaves the room, the mould stays.

Why does your bathroom keep moulding?

Tick what you're seeing — the pattern points to the cause.

    Your diagnosis will appear here.

Removing It Properly, Surface by Surface

Stop reaching for the same spray for every surface. What works on glass will drive mould deeper into plasterboard.

    • Silicone seals: Mould lives inside the silicone, not just on it. Surface scrubbing won't work — when it's deep, re-sealing beats scrubbing every time.
    • Grout: Use paste treatments and a soft brush. If the grout is crumbling and permanently stained, it's too far gone and needs raking out and replacing.
    • The ceiling: Use the safe way to treat overhead — no dripping bleach into your eyes. Apply a gel or a thick paste that clings to the paint while it works.
    • Painted walls: Kill the mould first, then clean the residue away. Once dry, seriously consider applying a specialized anti-mould paint.
    • Shower curtains and door tracks: Wash curtains with a towel for friction. Scrub the door tracks where water pools and stagnates.
    • The extractor fan itself: It is often the mouldiest object in the bathroom — and the one meant to prevent it. Take the cover off and wash it in the sink.

White Vinegar vs Bleach — The Honest Answer

Everyone reaches for the bleach. It whitens the surface instantly, making it look clean. But on porous surfaces, it often leaves the roots alive underneath.

Vinegar kills more effectively on grout and silicone because it penetrates the material. Bleach belongs on non-porous glass and glazed tiles; vinegar belongs everywhere else. And never, ever mix them — the chemical reaction is highly toxic.

Keeping It Away in an Auckland Bathroom

Auckland winters are damp, and older villas often have no bathroom fan at all. You have to actively manage the moisture.

Change your extractor run-time after showers to 15–20 minutes, not just 2 minutes while you towel off. Build a daily squeegee habit for the glass. If you only have a window, crack it during the shower and leave it open until the steam clears — it's cold, but it works.

    Bathroom Mould Questions, Answered

    Is bathroom mould dangerous?+

Yes, especially for asthma and allergy sufferers. The black mould common in damp bathrooms releases spores that degrade indoor air quality significantly.

Why does mould keep coming back to the same spot?+

Because the root system is still alive inside the porous material, or because that specific spot is a cold patch where condensation consistently pools.

Do I have to replace the silicone?+

If the mould is behind the seal or deeply embedded into it, yes. No surface cleaner can reach it, and it will eventually compromise the waterproof seal.

Does opening the window actually work in winter?+

Yes. Even cold winter air is drier than the steam from your shower. It creates the necessary airflow to pull the moisture out of the room.

When is mould a landlord's problem vs mine?+

Tenants must ventilate and clean regularly. But if the bathroom has no extractor fan or windows that open, structural dampness is a landlord's responsibility to fix.

Fix the moisture — the mould takes the hint.
